The Logical Mind

Hey everyone! Robert here.

We live in a so-called “logical world” ruled by the logical mind. The Information Age has left the majority of people trapped in their own heads to a greater degree than ever before, ruled by the analytical, egoic, logical mind. Most cannot realize this has happened because they have been rendered sightless by the ego. This is a modern epidemic that is raging out of control throughout the entire world. There is a cure however. The good news is that it’s non-evasive and requires no medical prescriptions or services. Of course, it’s not covered under the narrow parameters of Obamacare, so there are no ridiculously high rates to pay, no failing websites to visit, and it hasn’t been deemed as illegal – yet. There is a price though, it requires your awareness, your effort, and your diligence.

Remember that logic is nothing more than the accepted and limited understanding of any given point in time. There is a time for logic and there is a time for the illogical; self-mastery allows you to flow between them at will. Upon reflecting on the logical world I was reminded of the insightful lyrics of the song by Supertramp, titled, “The Logical Song” on their 1979 hit album Breakfast In America. You may know this song, but take a moment to really place your awareness on the lyrics anyway. I feel this rings the bell of truth even more today than it did in 1979.

When I was young, it seemed that life was so wonderful, a miracle, it was beautiful, magical. And all the birds in the trees, well they’d be singing so happily, joyfully, playfully, watching me. But then they send me away to teach me how to be sensible, logical, responsible, practical. And they showed me a world where I could be so dependable, clinical, intellectual, cynical. There are times when all the world’s asleep. The questions run too deep for such a simple man. Won’t you please, please tell me what we’ve learned. I know it sounds absurd but please tell me who I am.

I said now, watch what you say, now we’re calling you a radical, a liberal, fanatical, criminal. Won’t you sign up your name, we’d like to feel you’re acceptable, respectable, presentable, a vegetable.

But at night, when all the world’s asleep The questions run so deep for such a simple man. Won’t you please, please tell me what we’ve learned? I know it sounds absurd, please tell me who I am, who I am, who I am, who I am?

It is said that “The mind is not a cage, but a garden that must be cultivated.” Perhaps this is true, but when you become stuck in your own head, though an overactive mind, the mind becomes a prison constructed by the ego as a way to allow it to dominate your life. In this way your garden becomes poisoned, fruitless, and overrun with harmful weeds. Cultivating the mind is crucial to developing mindfulness, but then you also need to keep going to attain a state of no-mind, eventually letting go of the mind in order to attain freedom. Letting go of the logical and knowing the illogical.

All truth is known through paradox, yet a paradox is an illogical concept. It’s contradictory. It defies logic and that’s why those imprisoned by the logical, egoic mind refuse to accept it as truth. Isn’t it interesting how you attempt to understand the illogical mind through studying and focus with the logical mind – this can never work! You cannot grasp the illogical with the logical. You must let go of the logical. The illogical cannot be known through reading passages from any book. It cannot be known from listening to someone else speak, or reading this blog. It can only be known through letting go of the logical and experiencing the illogical for yourself.

As you separate from non-physical spirit reality and entrench yourself in the physical reality that is merely a dream to begin with, you create a disconnection between your mind/body and your spirit. Then as you succumb to the seductiveness of the logical mind you relinquish the illusion of reality of the physical world for the delusionary reality of the virtual world. When you give up the dream in order to live in a fantasy you are doubly lost. It’s like falling down a rabbit hole into a dream within a dream. The true world is in the non-physical, formlessness of the spirit. The oneness with all.

In doing so, you detach from your body and spirit as it is the logical mind that blocks your ability to feel your body and feel your spirit. Spirituality is about feeling your spirit, to know it for yourself, as yourself, through this connection that can be felt. Your logical mind interferes with the communication from your gut. When this happens, the inability to feel and listen to your instincts (body) takes place. Likewise, it is the logical mind that prevents you from listening to your heart. It causes you to doubt what you know in your heart to be true. When this happens, the connection to your spirit through the doorway of the heart is lost. This is the ego’s trick; to block these forms of natural communication in order to be the only voice heard. Then it can rule you because you no longer hear (or feel) the voices of truth.

The goal now is to understand how to reconnect to these parts of yourself. The main thing to understand is that you cannot find spirit through the logical mind because the spirit operates from the illogical. There is no form, no studies to read, no experts to consult. Logic as you believe in it does not exist. You simply must be able to connect with your illogical nature in order to feel your spirit. Open your heart, this is the doorway to your spirit. There is a natural communication taking place constantly between your brain and heart. When the heart is able to dominate this communication through being heart-centered, you retain a positive connection to your spirit. When the brain dominates the communication, the heart closes and the ego is strengthened. Follow your instincts – what you feel in your gut. Follow your intuition – what you feel in your heart. Quiet the mind and transcend it altogether. This will lead you to truth and freedom.

There are many practices that involve chanting, signing, praying, or making positive affirmations while striking a bowl gong, wooden fish (temple block), or other ritual instrument. But, unless you are able to consciously feel your heart and your gut during these activities, you are simply using the logical mind combined with your mouth. Its all in your head. There is no awareness, no genuine connection to the Divine. For any practice to have value and yield real results you need to have open communication with your gut and heart. If there is no open connection to the heart, there is no feeling your spirit. Without this, any spiritual practice is nothing more than mental lip service.

Through developing a sense of feeling in your gut (body – instinct) and in your heart (spirit – intuition), you can function in all dimensions simultaneously; that of the mind, the body, and the spirit; all together. This is your unified whole. This is the balance of living in the physical world as a non-physical being while grasping the logical and illogical. Let go of your identity and just be. Embrace the illogical. Reestablish a connection to the formless, to the illogical. It is then that you can experience wisdom and truth for yourself instead of having to rely on external sources.
